In the first instance it was created to help student gemmologists with learning how to use the spectroscope; mainly to help train the eye to see weaker absorption in the spectrum.

Secondly, the pinhole attachment is invaluable for Visual Optics. A great technique developed by the late Alan Hodgkinson which can aid the identification of gemstones with just your Maglight or at the very least help narrow their identity down.

Lastly, When the pinhole attachment is removed and used on its own, held close to the eye; you’ll find Distant Vision readings become so very easy to see.

Not the most common of gem examples for each system shown, if you ignore Garnet, because what would be the fun of that.
